Why mental health matters

  • Mental health affects every part of our lives — how we think, feel, connect with others, and handle stress.
  • Taking care of your mental health can improve your relationships, increase your sense of purpose, and help you enjoy life more fully.
  • Everyone has mental health — just like we all have physical health — and it deserves just as much attention and care.

Myth: Mental health issues are rare.

Truth: Millions of people experience mental health challenges — it's common, and you're not alone. According to the 2022 Mental Health and Access to Care Survey by Statistics Canada, approximately 18.3% of Canadians aged 15 and older—over 5 million individuals—met the diagnostic criteria for a mood, anxiety, or substance use disorder within the previous 12 months. This means that roughly 1 in 5 Canadians experience a mental health issue each year.

Myth: Asking for help is a sign of weakness.

Truth: Reaching out takes courage and shows strength — it’s one of the healthiest things you can do.

Myth: You have to be in crisis to talk to someone.

Truth: Support is for everyone. You don’t have to be in crisis to benefit from talking, listening, or learning.

Myth: Mental health struggles look the same for everyone.

Truth: Mental health is personal — what’s overwhelming for one person may feel different to another, and that’s okay.

Self-care practices

Self-care is an attainable way, over which we have full control, to single-handedly better our own self and the experiences we have with the world around us.

  • Self-care is about attending to your own wellbeing by supporting your own physical and emotional needs
  • It is about healthy action (self-care practices), as well as an attitude of self-compassion.
  • To practice self-care, is to take deliberate or intentional actions to develop, protect, maintain, or improve our wellbeing

Self-talk is the inner dialogue that shapes how we see ourselves, especially in moments of stress or challenge.

Breathing is something we all do, all day, every day—and that’s what makes it such a powerful self-care tool.
