Our Employee-created program “Ten Minutes to Relaxation” was the dream of one of our HCWs. Flordeliza wanted a program for staff that featured Exercise to keep fit and work safely with the residents and staff, an academic program, and a community-supportive idea to welcome all without judgement or bullying.
It turned out to be a very successful program in turning “Burnout ” into joy! Each participant engages in a 5-minute Tai Chi warmup then on to 4 minutes masse. We do this Kongo style to prime up the “Happy Hormones”. The participants also include some of our residents. Our Academic and personal development sections are featured each week in a workbook.
BE KIND: Study and practise learning the different top values of the four main personality types. This study includes how to approach and respect all who may think differently from you. This tolerant approach helps with EMOTIONAL SAFETY.
Be Calm: TAI CHI features exercises to calm the mind along with our wind-up massage to help release “Happy Hormones” for the day. Supervisors have noticed workers entering into their shifts with a peaceful, joyful attitude… this spills over into the resident’s care for emotional safety as well.
BE SAFE: All aspects of our program are easy to follow no matter what your role as an employee. We teach physical safety in movements and transfers.
Please feel free to contact us for an update on how we implemented this innovation and what we could have done differently.
The program has been designed to share with all of our facilities with Beckley Farm Lodge as the pioneer site. This program would work with all facilities or community care.
We are in the third month of the Certificate Program and love each day without conflict.
Our residents are certainly in the “Here and Now” as they watch our exercise in their hallways and some decide to join in with us. They also love the neck and back massage! We are seeing fewer sick calls among the participants and better movement awareness.
