What is a joint occupational health and safety (JOHS?) committee?

A joint occupational health and safety (JOHS) committee is an advisory group of employer and employee representatives working together to promote a safe and healthy workplace.

What does a JOHS committee do?

  • Identifies workplace hazards and recommends solutions
  • Receives and addresses worker safety concerns
  • Consults with workers, supervisors, and industry experts
  • Meets regularly to discuss health and safety issues
  • Participates in workplace inspections and investigations
  • Makes recommendations to improve workplace safety
  • Evaluates the effectiveness of health and safety initiatives

Why should you consult your JOHS committee?

  • Exercise your right to participate – Workers have the right to be involved in workplace safety.
  • Report safety concerns– If unsafe work conditions are not addressed by your supervisor, bring them to the committee.
  • Find practical safety solutions – Get guidance on addressing common workplace hazards.
  • Help create a safer workplace – Reducing workplace incidents leads to fewer injuries and illnesses.

How can you get involved?

  • Check your workplace’s safety board for committee updates
  • Review your JOHS Committee’s meeting minutes
  • Speak with a committee representative about safety concerns
