To increase overall safety awareness, we have created a safety game similar to Jeopardy, with four categories, each with three questions, and each of our six communities competes to win our safety drills with new questions every month.
Utilizing our safety champions to present safety drills in a gaming format creates engagement, and the competition drives individuals to think safety first as they walk onto their jobs each day. This creates peer accountability and increases employee satisfaction with fewer injuries. This lighthearted competition encourages participation and comradery amongst community members, with our residents and families participating with our staff.
Seeing the ranking for their community has encouraged our staff and families to research some safety topics outside of the work environment.
Through involvement with our OH&S Committee, we have reviewed our record of injuries from the past three years, and we are aware of some major safety concerns and flaws that need to be addressed immediately. We have focused our safety awareness campaign on our greatest loss time injuries and some of the most common injuries. Eden Gardens is home to 130 people with dementia, and many of our residents have complex needs, often requiring two-person care.
Adding some fun into the work day has proven to increase morale, promote team building, and increase safety awareness. We are looking to engage more people each month as the contest progresses, and the greater safety awareness competition will reduce our injuries and claim costs.
