In healthcare, incivility can cause workers a great deal of stress and hostility in the workplace. There is a culture in healthcare that is a ‘sink or swim’ mentality rather than working together and helping each other out. I have worked in healthcare for 27 years as a care aide.
By educating and working with staff and management to create a respectful workplace. Promoting conflict resolution and respectful communication between all members. Being available to help staff work through conflicts that arise at the moment. Discourage gossip and negative talk about team members. Create a positive culture of looking for the good rather than focusing on the bad. Encourage members to talk issues through respectfully and in private. Making staff demonstrating uncivil, disrespectful and damaging behaviours aware and accountable. Encouraging all staff to be self-aware.
By actively being involved in huddles and leading by example, collaborating with management and the union for support and ideas, and openly discussing incivility, respectful behaviours and conflict resolution. Members can come to me confidentially to help work through problems. Being a mediator if necessary. Educating myself with education or reading material on the subject.
It promotes a working together work environment, which could reduce workplace injuries, fatigue and stressors. Promotes mental wellness and support.
