Sailing for Safety is a fun and simple way to track education process. Using a drawn map and paper sailboats, staff “sail” around Vancouver Island completing education modules for different ports as they go. Every staff member is encouraged to participate by colouring a sailboat, naming it and doing the education modules and experiences. The experiences are in-house education such as back care and lifting. Staff receive nautical miles on completion of the education modules, inhouse attendance is worth more miles.
The program aims to increase participation in education and decrease work-related injuries to staff.
Education is the key to effective safe practice in healthcare. 2021 had low attendance under 52% and 18% work-related injuries to staff.
This initiative helps educate and give confidence to the staff to follow safe practices while doing their work duties.
Focus on safety through education eg code green, Violence prevention, falls prevention, WHMIS.
Staff are tired and this initiative has given the staff energy, excitement and motivation. There is a lot of talk and laughter with discussions about the project.
The spirits of the staff have lifted. 70% of staff have coloured and named their sailboat and already participating and achieving miles in the education modules. They are moving around the Island.
Our goal is 90% of staff will complete education modules and in-house learning opportunities.
