Nikkei Seniors Health Care and Housing Society created customized and colour-coded flash cards to streamline the education process for safety procedures in the home. They noticed the inefficient outcomes of their fire drills and discovered the main reason for this was that the staff did not know what to do. Staff are often so busy with their existing workload that it can be tiresome and unappealing to use their spare time to refresh or educate themselves on their contribution to safety procedures.
To avoid confusion, the flashcards will be colour-coded to each role (care aides, nurses, maintenance, housekeepers, etc.). Each card will outline key moments and tasks specific to each role and will use short, concise language for quick and efficient learning.
The safety flashcards can be tailor-made for specific emergencies such as (but not limited to):
It will improve workplace safety simply because staff will become more knowledgeable in their duties in specific moments of crisis. The reduction in reaction time intervals will optimize staff actions to create a safer environment not only for the residents, but the staff as a collective as well.
The hope is that the safety flash cards will impact the staff's willingness to gain more knowledge and become more familiar with their role-specific duties. In turn, the staff will act and react with confidence in times of crisis and emergency.
