Delivered by SafeCare BC, an introduction to Motivational Interviewing is a free virtual workshop designed for leadership across the healthcare sector.

Motivational interviewing is commonly used in clinical situations as a strengths-based approach to conversations that help draw out people’s motivations and commitment to change. The skills and techniques of motivational interviewing are directly linked with increasing psychological health and safety in the workplace.

According to the National Standard on Psychological Health and Safety, Motivational Interviewing can improve the following psychological health and safety factors: organizational culture, psychological safety, leadership and expectations, engagement, growth and development, involvement, and influence.

In this 1.5-hour interactive session, the following topics will be discussed:

  • An introduction to motivational interviewing
  • Core skills of motivational interviewing
  • The processes of motivational interviewing
  • Addressing moral distress and conflict within teams
  • Leadership communication styles
