Communication is more than just exchanging information. Communication is how trust is built or eroded. It signals whether it is okay to ask questions, raise concerns, admit mistakes, disagree, or share feelings without fear of embarrassment, blame, or punishment. The way we speak to one another directly sets the tone and shapes the workplace culture.

Our words matter. Words are powerful. We have choices.

While we cannot control others, we can control the words we choose to use. We can choose to see others' strengths, avoid shaming, blaming, and judgment, empathize with others, and share our own experiences. When we do, it creates a better experience for everyone, especially ourselves.

Tips for planning and participating in PHS Days

A little planning goes a long way toward creating a meaningful and engaging experience for your team. The following tips will help you make the most out of this event and increase your chances of winning a prize!

  • Get the word out: We have made it easy with this promotional kit, complete with ready-to-use social media posts, posters, and email templates. Adapt the promotional materials as you see fit. Repeat your messaging across multiple channels and more than once.
  • Plan ahead: Take time to schedule your team activities in advance – there are two to choose from or participate in both! This could include building the activity into an already scheduled team meeting or huddle or create a dedicated session.
  • Support inclusive participation: Offer more than one opportunity to participate to ensure shift workers and diverse teams can join in.
  • Assign a champion: Consider designating someone from your Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committee, leadership team, or another interested staff member to act as a lead or event ambassador.
  • Encourage individual participation: Promote the individual activity by encouraging staff to set aside a few dedicated minutes and having leaders model participation.
