Civility under pressure

Learn practical communication tools to navigate challenging interactions while fostering a more respectful and psychologically healthy workplace.

Incivility can quietly erode workplace culture, teamwork, and staff well-being long before it becomes a formal workplace issue. In healthcare settings, uncivil interactions may arise between colleagues, leaders, patients, residents, and families, often under conditions of high stress and competing demands. This webinar explores why incivility occurs, its impact on individuals, teams, and quality of care, and evidence-informed strategies for responding constructively in the moment. Participants will learn practical communication tools to navigate challenging interactions while fostering a more respectful and psychologically healthy workplace.

Objectives:

  • Recognize the signs of workplace incivility and distinguish it from conflict, bullying, and harassment.
  • Describe how repeated acts of incivility affect psychological health and safety, teamwork, employee well-being, and the quality of patient or resident care.
  • Identify common contributors to uncivil behaviour in healthcare environments, including workload pressures, stress, fatigue, moral distress, and communication breakdowns.
  • Apply practical, evidence-informed communication strategies to respond to incivility respectfully, confidently, and in the moment.
  • Support a culture of respect by modelling professional behaviour, setting healthy boundaries, and contributing to psychologically safer workplaces.

Outcomes:

  • Recognize behaviours that contribute to workplace incivility.
  • Understand the impact of incivility on caregiver well-being, team functioning, and quality of care.
  • Respond to uncivil behaviour using evidence-informed communication techniques.
  • Support a workplace culture where respect, civility, and psychological safety can thrive.
