Mattering at work: From understanding to everyday action

In this Ask Me Anything session, we will explore what mattering means in the workplace, why it is particularly important in work centred on caring for others, and how it can influence employee wellbeing, connection, burnout, and retention.

Mattering is the experience of feeling valued and knowing that we add value—of feeling seen, heard, appreciated, and significant to those around us. It is a fundamental human need and an important part of creating psychologically healthy and safe workplaces.

In this Ask Me Anything session, we will explore what mattering means in the workplace, why it is particularly important in work centred on caring for others, and how it can influence employee wellbeing, connection, burnout, and retention. Most importantly, we will explore how each of us can contribute to a workplace where people know they matter. Bring your curiosity, questions, and experiences as we learn together and explore practical ways to create everyday experiences that help people feel valued and recognize the value they bring.

Objectives:

  • Understand the concept of mattering and what it means to feel valued and add value in the workplace.
  • Explore why mattering is an important component of psychological health and safety and employee wellbeing.
  • Consider the importance of mattering in workplaces and roles centred on caring for others.
  • Recognize how everyday interactions and workplace experiences can contribute to a greater sense of mattering.

Outcomes:

  • A greater understanding of mattering and its relevance to psychologically healthy and safe workplaces.
  • Increased awareness of how their everyday actions and interactions can influence whether others experience a sense of mattering.
  • Practical approaches they can apply in their own workplace to help others feel valued and recognize that they add value.
  • An understanding that creating a workplace where people matter is a shared opportunity to which everyone can contribute.
