Essential movements that support independence in older adults

Join Better5, in partnership with SafeCare BC, for a practical and interactive session on supporting movement and independence in older adults.

Designed for care teams and recreation aides, this webinar introduces five functional movements that support everyday activities such as standing from a chair, stepping over a curb and carrying objects. Participants will explore chair squats, step-ups, farmer’s carries, seated bridges and single-leg or tandem stands, with demonstrations and guidance from qualified health professionals.

Through short demonstrations and guided practice, participants will learn how to support each movement, adapt it for different abilities and recognize signs that it is time to stop. The session will also explore simple ways to incorporate movement into the day without requiring specialized equipment or a fitness background.

By the end of the webinar, participants will:

  • Understand how functional movement can support independence, mobility and fall prevention in older adults.
  • Learn five practical movements and how they connect to common everyday activities.
  • Explore ways to adapt movements for different abilities and levels of mobility.
  • Recognize warning signs such as chest pain, dizziness, unusual shortness of breath or pallor that indicate an activity should stop.
  • Understand how balance, strength, mobility and endurance contribute to maintaining everyday function.

Learning outcomes

Participants will leave with practical strategies to:

  • Support older adults in completing the five movements safely and confidently.
  • Adjust movements based on an individual’s abilities and needs.
  • Use simple tools, such as the talk test and a red-flag checklist, to monitor how someone is responding to activity.
  • Incorporate short opportunities for movement into everyday routines.
  • Identify when a movement should be modified, stopped or referred to an appropriate health professional.
