In long-term care it is increasingly apparent that who is on shift is just as important as how many staff are on shift. Quality care is difficult to achieve when we do not routinely engage with one another in a positive, or civil, manner.

Five game-changing resolutions to transform your 2025

December 17, 2024

"There's something very liberating about a fresh start," says social psychologist Omid Fotuhi, emphasizing how New Year's resolutions give us a chance to redefine ourselves and our goals (2024, par. 5).

As the clock strikes midnight this year, we take a moment to reflect on the past year, celebrate its accomplishments, and think about how we can continue to improve. However, we tend to overcomplicate New Year's Resolutions. An overly ambitious or challenging goal is unlikely to be maintained.

While this blank canvas invites reflection, we must set achievable goals if we want to see meaningful change. Beyond personal goals, attitude may drive organizational changes that promote innovation, security, and growth.

Here are five practical yet powerful resolutions to help launch you into a healthier and safer 2025:

Resolution #1: Micro safety breaks

  • How to do it: A quick stretch and scan break to check for hazards and prevent strain
  • Why it works: Short pauses not only provide comfort but also help to prevent accidents.

Resolution #2: Gratitude boosts

  • How to do it: Create a psychologically safe workplace by practicing kindness daily. Gratitude can be a simple 'thank you' or a post-it note on a workplace bulletin board.
  • Why it works: Promoting optimism strengthens team ties and lowers stress.

Resolution #3: Thriving through tidiness

  • How to do it: Dedicate a few minutes daily to declutter your work area. Organize supplies, untangle cords, and ensure mobility aids are safely stored.
  • Why it works: A neat, ergonomic environment reduces trip hazards and makes tasks smoother.

Resolution #4: Tech-enhanced wellness

  • How to do it: Use a fitness tracker, smartphone app, or smartwatch to set gentle reminders for hydration or quick walks during downtime. Alternatively, you can explore digital resources, like our safety training courses or mental health webinars.
  • Why it works: Technology simplifies good habits and provides instant access to tools supporting mental and physical well-being, even on a busy shift.

Resolution #5: Create a 'win the day' mindset

  • How to do it: Choose one small but significant activity to begin each day that, if completed, will ensure the day's success.
  • Why it works: Focusing on a single attainable goal provides a sense of accomplishment and momentum, resulting in a positive ripple effect throughout the day.

As the new year begins, remember that transformation doesn't come from grand gestures but small, consistent steps. Each resolution, whether taking a quick break, expressing gratitude, or organizing your workspace, builds momentum for lasting change.

As the movie The Pursuit of Happyness reminds us, "The world is your oyster. It's up to you to find the pearls." 2025 is your opportunity to create those pearls, one intentional choice at a time. Make the most of the small victories and see how they impact your life and year.
