The Joint Occupational Health and Safety (JOHS) Committee has a role to promote workplace health and safety, consult with workers and employers about workers’ health and safety, make recommendations to improve the effectiveness of the Occupational Health and Safety program and maintain compliance with regulatory requirements.
A JOHS committee is required in workplaces where there are 20 or more employees. Small workplaces with more than nine but fewer than 20 employees must have a worker health and safety representative. The representative has the same duties and functions as a joint committee.
The information in this section will support your Joint Occupational Health and Safety Committees or Worker Representatives in fulfilling their legal obligations in the workplace.
JOHS committees help create a strong safety culture in the workplace and allow for workers’ representatives to work along with the employer representatives, to actively participate in health and safety activities such as workplace incident investigations and inspections, health and safety training and education programs, and development of health and safety policies and procedures.
