In long-term care it is increasingly apparent that who is on shift is just as important as how many staff are on shift. Quality care is difficult to achieve when we do not routinely engage with one another in a positive, or civil, manner.

Revitalize yourself: Creative ways to recharge and reconnect

March 13, 2025

Finding true moments of pause can feel elusive in a world that's always on the go.

Recharging is about more than just rest. It's about reconnecting with what makes you feel alive, inspired, and at peace. Here are some creative "me time" ideas to help you feel like yourself again:

1. Revisit a childhood hobby

Think back to those hobbies you loved as a kid - drawing, building, or playing games. Reconnecting with them can bring back a sense of joy and nostalgia. Pairing it with something like your favourite music or a podcast makes it even more relaxing.

Consider how your "play personality" might shape your approach (2025). Whether you're spontaneous, creative, or a bit competitive, it's a great way to tap into that carefree side of yourself.

2. Backwards journaling

Instead of recounting your day from start to finish, try starting with how you're feeling right now. Are you...

Stressed? Energized? Curious?

Then work backwards, tracing your thoughts and emotions to see what brought you here. It's a therapeutic way to understand your feelings without overthinking the process.

3. Create a "dream list"

Instead of a to-do list, make a "dream list" of things that spark your curiosity. Whether it's a topic you want to learn about or a place you'd like to visit. Over time, add to it and gradually check them off.

4. Forest bathing (Shinrin Yoku)

Forest bathing, or Shinrin Yoku, is a practice that originated in Japan in the 1980s (2024). It's all about immersing yourself in nature - walking through the woods, breathing deeply, and letting the forest's sights, sounds, and smells ground you.

The practice has been shown to reduce stress, improve mood, and boost overall well-being. Next time you feel overwhelmed, take a step into nature. It's a practical yet powerful way to reset your mind and body.

5. Pottery or painting party

A pottery or painting session is a fun, low-pressure way to connect with loved ones. Whether you follow a tutorial or freestyle, you'll end up with something unique to remember the day by. And later, your creation will remind you that the best memories often come from the most unexpected moments.
