WorkSafeBC sets industry insurance base rates annually based on claim costs, payroll data, and historical trends. These rates ensure sufficient funds are collected to cover the cost of workplace injuries and claims for each sector.
WorkSafeBC has acknowledged an error in calculating the 2025 SafeCare BC levy, which is included in the premiums paid by our two member employer groups–those providing community health support services (classification unit 766006) and those in long-term care (classification unit 766011). The mistake occurred when incorrect payroll data was used in the calculation, resulting in a $0.08 reduction per $100 of payroll in the levy and insurance base rate for 2025.
While this means that affected employers will pay slightly lower insurance premiums in 2025, WorkSafeBC will gradually recoup the shortfall over the next four years by applying a $0.02 levy increase annually from 2026 to 2029. The amount employers will save in 2025 will vary based on the organization’s historical safety performance and payroll size.
What this means for you:
To clarify further, WorkSafeBC and SafeCare BC will host an industry-specific information session following the release of preliminary 2026 rates. The session will also provide additional information on the drivers of insurance premiums and how to reduce these costs.
