In long-term care it is increasingly apparent that who is on shift is just as important as how many staff are on shift. Quality care is difficult to achieve when we do not routinely engage with one another in a positive, or civil, manner.

Balancing Psychological Demands and Job Performance: Harvard's Intervention Method

June 20, 2024

Ever felt the weight of a task that demands your all, mentally and socially? That's psychological demands - the gripping anxiety of heavy workloads, looming deadlines, chaotic schedules, and intricate tasks. These various elements can have an impact not only on your professional performance but also on your physical well-being, as emotional demands have been related to health problems such as high blood pressure, stroke, heart disease, and more (2014, par. 2).

Before addressing these mental challenges, identify what's specifically depleting your energy. Are you grappling with:

  • Complex work relationships?
  • Instances of discrimination or bias?
  • Long and unpredictable work hours?
  • Continuous feedback or criticism?
  • Unexpected relocation demands?

Pinpointing the origins of workplace mental strain is the pivotal first step in effectively overcoming it. Why? Because awareness propels action. Understanding our stressors empowers us to devise coping strategies and regain control over our daily lives.

Once you understand the reasons behind your stress, you can start implementing primary, secondary, or tertiary intervention measures (Schwartz & McCarthy, 2014):

  • Primary interventions aim to prevent stress, encompassing initiatives like wellness programs or participation in conflict resolution courses.
  • Secondary measures involve risk removal, from job redesign to employee fitness programs.
  • Tertiary interventions entail seeking additional support, such as counselling, employee assistance programs, or cognitive behavioural therapy.

Recognizing that psychological demands are multifaceted, it's essential to keep an open mind and be willing to try new ways to feel better mentally and emotionally. See what helps you the most, whether using apps for relaxation, joining a support group, or making time for things you enjoy. This isn't just about self-improvement - it's about recognizing how reducing psychologically demanding tasks can positively impact your personal and professional life.

Seeking more support? Dive into our self-paced online course to master stress management strategies and enhance resilience at home and work. Since awareness propels action, feel free to print and share this insightful guide on psychological demands with your colleagues.
