Mental Health First Aid Standard

Be the calm in someone’s storm—prepare to help when it matters most.

Mental Health First Aid is an evidence-based training program developed by the Mental Health Commission of Canada. This course is designed to give you the knowledge and confidence to support someone who may be experiencing a decline in their mental well-being, or a mental health or substance use crisis. Just like physical first aid, Mental Health First Aid is the initial help provided until professional care is available, or the situation is resolved.

What you'll learn

As a certified mental health first aider, you will learn how to:

  • Preserve life when a person may be at risk to themselves or others
  • Prevent a mental health concern from escalating
  • Promote recovery by encouraging access to appropriate resources
  • Provide comfort and reassurance to someone in distress

You’ll walk away with practical skills to recognize warning signs, respond effectively in a crisis, and reduce stigma in your community, workplace, or home.

Course format: Blended delivery

This course is delivered in two parts:

  • Part 1: Self-paced online module (approx. 2 hours)
    • Participants complete an interactive, self-guided module online. This must be finished at least two weeks prior to the instructor-led session. Access details will be sent within 48 hours of registration.
  • Part 2: Instructor-led session (approx. 7 hours)
    • Join a certified mental health first aid facilitator for a full-day, interactive session (either in-person or via Zoom), where you’ll practice applying your skills through real-life scenarios and group discussions.

Why take this course?

  • Be confident in a crisis—know how to respond when someone needs help
  • Support those around you—help friends, coworkers, or family in difficult times
  • Break the stigma—be part of a community working to normalize mental health conversations
  • Boost your resume—earn a respected certification recognized across Canada
  • Improve your workplace or community—create safer, more supportive environments
  • Flexible learning—combines self-paced and live training to fit your schedule

This course is for:

Care aides, home and community care workers, support service workers, nurses, managers, family caregivers, or anyone who wants to improve their knowledge of mental health first aid.
