Safety Den 2026 winner - Luther Court - Visual path kit

Luther Court took first place and the $2,000 top prize with care aide Joseph Valencia’s idea: the visual path kit.

The visual path kit is a colour-coded clip system designed to help care aides quickly identify a resident’s mobility support needs. These needs can vary, from assistance on a particular side to different equipment for short transfers and longer walks. Joseph’s idea provides a simple visual reminder to help reduce uncertainty and support safer care.

The proposed system uses clips or magnets on doorframes or bed rails:

  • Green: The resident is independent over short distances.
  • Yellow: The resident requires one-person assistance on their left side.
  • Blue: The resident requires one-person assistance on their right side.
  • Red: The resident requires a two-person transfer or a mechanical lift.

The idea came directly from Joseph’s personal experience. After injuring his shoulder while assisting a resident, he began looking for a simple, practical way to help care aides make safer decisions during transfers.

Joseph’s story reflects what Safety Den is all about: front-line workers identifying real challenges, developing practical solutions, and helping make continuing care safer for everyone.
