SCENARIO

Frequent sick calls

There is a tendency for weekend staff to call in sick. It is not always a specific person, but it is impacting everyone’s workload. It is Sunday morning, and Dalisay has called in sick. The nurse-in-charge, Lindsay, overhears staff gossiping about her ‘frequent fake sick calls.’

Question 1

If you were Lindsay, what would you do?

Conversation starters:

Team huddle:

“Let’s huddle up for a second. I know we are working short-staffed again, and I can see how frustrating that is. I really appreciate how hard you are all working to take care of our residents.

While it’s a tough day, let’s remember to be soft on people and hard on problems. We don’t always know what is happening in someone else's life, so let’s avoid guessing why they are away. I’m going to speak with management to see how we can get more support for these shifts.”

Speaking with management:

“I’d like to discuss the staffing shortages we’ve been having on weekends. It’s starting to hurt the team’s morale and is leading to things like gossip. Can we meet to talk about how to better support the staff and make sure we have enough people on the floor?”
