SCENARIO

Tones at the nursing station

Sarah has observed Noreen making a sarcastic remark at the nursing station before stomping off down the hall. Sarah has noticed this behaviour before, and she is not the only one. She is afraid to say or do anything that might further upset Noreen.

Conversation starters:

Ask to speak privately:

Find an appropriate time to ask Noreen if you two can chat. “Noreen, do you have a few minutes this afternoon for us to have a quick chat?”

Describe the impact the behaviour had on you:

When I heard the comment you made at the nursing station, I felt a bit disrespected. I really value our working relationship and so I just wanted to check in with you to see if everything is okay?

Give Noreen space and time:

“I just wanted to share that with you because I really value you as part of the team. Let me know if you want to chat further about any of what we discussed.”
