Hiding in plain sight: How a wider “Field of View” can improve safety and reduce costs

This session introduces the Safety Spectrum model, helping to expand the understanding leaders have of the human and system conditions that shape safety long before harm occurs.

Many healthcare organizations manage health and safety based on what is most visible: obvious hazards and reported injuries. This narrow view captures only a pinhole of the risk present within an organization.
This session introduces the Safety Spectrum model, helping to expand the understanding leaders have of the human and system conditions that shape safety long before harm occurs. You’ll see how two innovative solutions: gamified situational awareness training and a health and safety dashboard increases your visibility to support earlier intervention, better decision-making, and safer workplaces.

Objectives and Outcomes:

  • Understand how Field of View thinking expands awareness across the safety spectrum, helping leaders see beyond reported injuries and better appreciate the human and system conditions that influence workplace safety.
  • Identify how different approaches and tools illuminate different parts of the safety spectrum, and why seeing more of these upstream conditions supports earlier, more informed decisions and fewer reactive responses.
  • Apply the 10xField of View framework to your own healthcare setting by identifying opportunities to broaden safety insight in a way that supports safer workplaces and more effective use of limited resources.
