This story is told from the perspective of Billie Askelend, Senior Executive Director at Nicola Lodge.
No one expected a love story to begin at Nicola Lodge, least of all Roy. At eighty-nine, he had settled into a life of quiet routines, believing love had passed him by. Then Janice came along, and everything changed.
The walls of Nicola Lodge have seen countless stories of care, but this one is about love.

I first noticed their story in the smallest of ways. A glance exchanged across the lounge. A laugh shared in the afternoons. Hands brushing together in the hallway. Roy would linger a little longer in the dining room just to see Janice’s smile.
When they expressed their wish to celebrate their love in a meaningful way, our dedicated recreation aide, Winnie Bawalan, who works full-time in our Dewdney neighbourhood, stepped in without hesitation. She embraced their dream as her own and, together with the recreation team, transformed it into reality.
Then, on June 11th, 2025, I had the privilege of witnessing something unforgettable. Sunlight spilled across our courtyard, where chairs were arranged in a circle of warmth and belonging. Flowers softened the space with their fragrance, and soft music drifted through the air. The courtyard filled as residents, staff, and family came together to celebrate a love commitment ceremony for Janice and Roy. It was a moment that felt both deeply personal and larger than life.
This was more than a ceremony. It reflected who we are at Nicola Lodge; a community that believes in love, honours dreams, and brings our values to life every single day. Winnie and the team approached this opportunity with joy, creativity, and optimism by turning a simple wish into an extraordinary celebration.

Every detail was planned with care, from thoughtfully delivered invitations to a heartfelt performance by our music therapist. A dress and veil were chosen, rings set aside, and a team member stepped forward to officiate. The flowers and cake, generously donated by a local grocery store, and the treats prepared by our dietary team added warmth and made the day feel truly special. All these touches came together to create a celebration that was intentional, meaningful, and full of love.
And above all, I saw compassion. A team willing to do whatever it took to bring happiness to two people who found each other when they thought love had passed them by.
Just months ago, Roy spent most of his days quietly in his room, convinced love was no longer for him. Janice kept to herself as well, hesitant to reach out. But since finding each other, they have both come alive. They smile more, support one another, and have become inseparable. In a place where many expect to live out their final chapter, Janice and Roy began a new one.
That day reminded me of what care really means. It isn’t measured in tasks or routines, but in the simple, human connections that give life its heart.
And sometimes, when you least expect it, you are there to see something extraordinary. Something that makes you believe in miracles.
