SCENARIO

Working with a new nurse

Marten, a recently graduated licensed practical nurse, is leading a report on his first solo shift. He reads out the bowel movement list and suggests that Mrs. Rose have an enema. Two of the care aides, Vesna and Linda, look at each other and roll their eyes. Vesna says sarcastically, “Well, good luck with that. We only ever use a suppository for her”. Marten feels dismissed by her comment but continues reading the list. Small things like this continue to happen over the following few weeks – it’s always Vesna who makes the sarcastic comment or rolls her eyes at his suggestions. Marten knows he needs to speak with Vesna about her behaviour but feels very nervous about doing so.

Question 1

If you were Marten, what would you do?

Conversation starters:

Quick check-in:

"Hi Vesna, do you have a second? I’m still learning how things work here, and I know you’ve been here a long time. I noticed my idea for Mrs. Rose wasn’t what you usually do. Since you know her so well, would you mind giving me a heads-up if I suggest something that might not work? I’d really appreciate your help."

Pick your brain:

"Hey Vesna, can I pick your brain for a minute? I’m new, and I know that experience is the best teacher. Since you're on the floor every day, you know what these residents need. If you ever see me suggest something that doesn't seem right for them, please let me know. I’d love to learn from you."

Teaming up:

"Hi Vesna, I’d love for us to work more closely together. I have the medical training, but you know these residents inside and out. I think if we team up, we can make the best choices for them. I really care about what you think, so please share your ideas with me!"
