Venting on Social Media

Harpreet was frustrated with one of her colleagues, Sukhi, after their shift this morning and wrote a scathing Facebook post. While she did not name Sukhi directly, it was obvious who she was talking about. Harpreet realized that this was inappropriate and deleted the comment later that afternoon. A different colleague had already seen the post, taken a screenshot before it was deleted, and showed it to Sukhi. What could Harpreet have done instead of writing the Facebook post?

Question 1

Conversation Starters:

· (To initiate the conversation with Sukhi): "Hi Sukhi, do you have a few minutes to talk in private when you get a chance? There was something from our shift this morning I wanted to clear the air about."

· (During the conversation): "When [specific event] happened this morning, I felt frustrated because [explain the impact on you using 'I' statements]. I'm hoping we can talk it through so we can work better together."

· (Self-talk to prevent posting): "I'm really angry right now. Posting this will feel good for a minute, but it's unprofessional and will only make things worse. I need to take a walk and calm down before I decide what to do."

Further reflection: What should Harpreet have done once she realized her mistake in writing the post?

· Explain and apologize to Sukhi for what she did.

· Acknowledge the mistake, let Sukhi know it will not happen again, and show that she has learned from it.

· Create space for a respectful conversation about what happened – including the behaviour from Sukhi that prompted the post – and discuss how they can move forward positively
