Serving on SafeCare BC committees – what to expect

Serving on our board and committees is a meaningful opportunity to help guide workplace safety for thousands of healthcare workers across the province.

Work with us

At SafeCare BC, our Board of Directors and committee members play a pivotal role in shaping the future of workplace health and safety in British Columbia’s continuing care sector. These members help guide an organization that is:

  • Innovative – We bring cutting-edge education, tools, and resources to reduce injuries and improve safety culture.
  • Collaborative – We work alongside government, employers, unions, and frontline workers to tackle complex challenges.
  • Purpose-driven – We are focused on creating safer, healthier workplaces for those who care for others.

We offer orientation for all incoming board members to learn more about the organization and our governance. We also offer opportunities for all board members to further develop their knowledge of effective board leadership.

Your voice matters. Help us lead change in workplace health and safety

"It is always an honour to serve as Board Chair, and this year has demonstrated remarkable progress in strengthening workplace health and safety in continuing care."

Board and committee member expectations

  • Be present and engaged:
Your voice matters. Members are expected to attend and contribute to all meetings. We value your insight and need your participation to support thoughtful, effective decision-making.
  • Attend in-person when possible:
Meetings are planned as face-to-face gatherings. A virtual option is available if needed, but in-person attendance is strongly encouraged. The board and committees meet approximately 8 times per year for 4 hours, with one meeting taking place as a full-day session for strategic planning.
  • Respect the flow of meetings:
Arriving on time and staying for the full duration helps keep meetings focused and productive. Arriving late or leaving mid-way through can disrupt the group’s work.
  • Notify us if you can’t attend:
If you’re unable to attend a meeting (or part of it), please let the Chair or SafeCare BC staff know in writing at least 72 hours in advance when possible. This helps ensure we maintain quorum.
  • Maintain good attendance:
Members are expected to attend at least 50% of Board meetings. Missing three consecutive meetings may result in being asked to resign. Attendance is reviewed annually and considered before renewing Board terms.
