Safe Resident Handling Campaign

SafeCare logoSafeCare BC is kicking off a 10-week safe resident handling awareness campaign with the release of this policy template. Other elements of the campaign will be announced in the coming weeks and include plans to host training workshops across the province for long term care staff, an easy-to-access on-line tool kit and a design competition that will invite long-term care providers and students across the province to propose safety innovations that can reduce MSI injury rates.

According to recent WorkSafeBC statistics, Musculoskeletal injuries (MSI) related to resident handling are the number one cause of staff injuries in B.C.’s long-term care sector.

Back and other strains in the workplace accounted for approximately 75 per cent of the long term care sector’s injury claims in 2014. The total claims cost to employers and the seniors care system over the past five years is estimated at $85 million

Safe Resident Handling Policy Template

SafeCare BC’s new Safe Resident Handling (SRH) Policy template will supplement existing policies of continuing care providers across the province and guide the establishment of new ones where none currently exist. The goal to promote safe resident handling procedures to minimize the risk of injury to staff, and ensure safe, quality care for the residents. The SRH policy also intends reduce the risk and extent of musculoskeletal and other injuries within continuing care, as well as create a culture of safety.

The SRH Policy provides procedures and responsibility for implementation and maintenance of a multi-faceted program. The SRH program integrates evidence-based practices and technology in order to minimize both human and capital expenses associated with staff injuries caused by resident handling and movement.
