SCENARIO

Supporting a stressed coworker

Priya and Mary have been working together on the day shift for a few weeks. Mary looks after the residents on the East Wing and Priya looks after the West Wing. It has been a busy morning getting everyone dressed and to the dining hall for breakfast. Mary arrives at breakfast late with Mr. Biggs. She looks stressed and flustered. Priya knows that Mr. Biggs has a hard time getting dressed, which makes Mary’s job much tougher.

Question 1

If you were Priya, what would you do?

Conversation starters:

Validate your coworker:

"Hi Mary, I can see it's been a really busy morning for you. I know Mr. Biggs likes to take his time in the morning—you did a great job getting everyone here!"

Offer help:

"Hey Mary, you look like you've been moving fast this morning! Is there anything I can grab for you while I'm up, like a coffee or some extra supplies?"
