SCENARIO

Silence as communication

Joti has just started her new job. She makes sure to say hello and smile at everyone she works with. She notices that when she greets her coworker Pooja, Pooja does not greet her back or look up from her work. Joti cannot think of anything she has said or done that would prompt this behaviour.

Question 1

If you were Joti, what would you do?

Conversation starters:

Simple and friendly:

“Hi Pooja, I just wanted to check-in. I noticed when I say hello, you’re usually focused on your work and don’t often say it back. I just wanted to make sure we’re off to a good start! I’m really happy to be part of the team and wanted to make sure I'm supporting you well”
