SCENARIO

Giving feedback

Lisa, a licensed practical nurse (LPN), worked her first post-orientation shift yesterday morning and has come in today to find a long list on her desk, written in red pen. Lisa discovers that the list is from, Sonia, yesterday's evening LPN, and it has outlined every task that Lisa did not complete yesterday.

Question 1

If you were Lisa, what would you do?

Conversation starters:

Requesting feedback (Option A):

"Hi Sonia, I'm Lisa. I found your list from yesterday. As it was my first shift off orientation, I appreciate you letting me know what I missed so I can learn. I was wondering if, in the future, we could find a different way to share this kind of feedback. Maybe a quick verbal report at handoff would work well for both of us. I'm really eager to learn from you."

Seeking advice (Option D):

"Hi Sonia, I'm Lisa. I saw the notes you left for me. I can tell you have a lot of experience with this unit, and since I'm just starting, I was wondering if you had any advice on how you prioritize your tasks on a hectic day. I would value your insight."

Combined approach (Options A + D):

"Hi Sonia, I'm Lisa. I saw the list you left, and I want to thank you for the feedback—I'm trying to learn as quickly as I can. I know you've been here a long time, and I'd love any advice you have on managing the workflow. Also, moving forward, would you be open to giving me feedback like this in a quick face-to-face chat? I find I learn best that way."
