SAFECARE BC ANNUAL REPORT 2024

Tailored Outreach Program

Building Safer Workplaces in Continuing Care

Our Tailored Outreach Program (TOP) is a cornerstone of our commitment to fostering safer and healthier work environments within the continuing care sector. Since 2018, TOP has provided personalized guidance to organizations, helping them identify and address gaps in their occupational health and safety programs. For many, TOP is the first step towards cultivating a positive workplace culture, enhancing staff well-being, and reducing workplace injuries.

Impact and Reach:

Since its inception, 41 organizations have participated in TOP, primarily within long-term care. Analysis of injury rates from 2019 to 2023 reveals a positive trend, with many participants experiencing reduced workplace injuries.

2024 Highlights:

In 2024, three large care homes participated in TOP, focusing on strengthening key areas such as training, safe work procedures, and hazard identification. New for 2024 was the inclusion of psychological health and safety in the workplace assessment, reflecting the growing emphasis on mental well-being in the sector.

Resources and Support:

In 2024, we developed new tools and resources to support TOP participants, including orientation forms, policy templates, and updated injury management programs. Participants also benefited from consultative support, training, and access to our courses.

Looking Ahead:

Despite ongoing challenges such as staff turnover and time constraints, we remain committed to expanding the reach of TOP. In 2025, we aim to enroll five new organizations, prioritizing those with high injury rates and positioning TOP as a valuable tool for achieving Certificate of Recognition (COR) certification or accreditation.

By continuing to provide tailored support and resources, we empower organizations to create safer, healthier, and more supportive workplaces for all.

Supporting wellness through healthy, safe, and injury-free workplaces.

SafeCare BC strives to empower those working in BC's continuing care sector to create a safety culture through evidence-based education, advocacy for safer workplaces, leadership, and collaboration.
