SAFECARE BC ANNUAL REPORT 2024

Safety Den

Safety Den 2024, held on May 27th in Whistler, marked a significant evolution for this innovative showcase. This year, the event introduced a revised format designed to enhance the experience for both participants and attendees. A key change involved the healthcare finalists, who, instead of live presentations, collaborated to produce compelling videos demonstrating their innovations. This ensured a level playing field for all three finalists while requiring them to engage in a live question-and-answer session with the judges. Additionally, a highly anticipated "people's choice award" was introduced, responding directly to feedback from previous years. The top prize for the winning innovation was also doubled to $2,000.

The event garnered considerable interest, with 17 submissions received: 12 in the healthcare category and five in the commercial sector. The healthcare finalists presented a diverse array of impactful projects. Louis Brier Home and Hospital took first place with their Organizational Health and Safety Dashboard, a user-friendly tool that presents real-time data on workplace injuries, highlighting high-risk areas within the facility. This visual representation empowers workers to be more vigilant in potentially hazardous zones. Eden Gardens secured second place with its "You Matter" app, which promotes physical and psychological safety. The app features sections for reporting injuries, accessing resources, and sharing positive feedback about colleagues. Broadway Lodge earned third place with their Active Living Program, a decade-long initiative that enhances residents' physical capabilities, reducing the physical strain on staff during transfers and daily care.

In the commercial category, Savaria Patient Care, featuring Handicare & Span Medical, emerged as the winner with their Raizer II product. HME Home Health's HME SIGNATURE SERIES NS Squared Cushion and MUSIC CARE by Room 217's MUSIC CARE CERTIFY FOR ORGANIZATIONS (MCCO) were named runners-up.

Safety Den 2024 received overwhelmingly positive feedback. Attendees praised the event as a testament to community connection and innovation in action. Comments highlighted the value of the ideas presented, with participants noting that they learned something new. Survey results confirmed this sentiment, with 100% of respondents reporting new knowledge gained and 87.5% rating the session as excellent or very good.

The event was also documented through media, including a "Road to Safety Den" video and a photo capturing its spirit, which is available online.
