SCENARIO

Cold Shoulder After Absences

Elena has developed a pattern of frequently calling in sick for her scheduled shifts. This has become a noticeable trend, causing frustration and leading to strained relationships within the team.

Recently, after Elena returned to work following another instance of calling in sick, she found herself facing a chilly reception from her co-workers. As she approached the nursing station, the other staff gave her curt nods or avoided eye contact.

As Elena began morning care, getting assistance from her colleagues was challenging. Her requests for support were met with indifference, and her co-workers seemed unwilling to collaborate. The cold shoulder treatment continued for the remainder of the shift.

Unaware of the perceptions her frequent absences had generated, Elena struggled to understand the sudden change in her colleagues' behavior.

Question 1

As Elena’s colleagues, how could you support her?

Conversation starters:

· To initiate a private conversation: "Hey Elena, do you have a minute to chat privately? I just wanted to check in and see how you're doing."

· To express concern without accusation: "We've noticed you've been away a bit lately, and we were getting worried about you. Is everything alright?"

· To offer support: "I know we don't know what's going on, and it's none of our business, but we want you to know we're here for you if you need anything. The team is strongest when we support each other, both on and off the floor."

Further reflection:

As Elena’s manager, how could you address this situation?

· Have a private conversation: Schedule a private meeting with Elena to discuss her recent pattern of frequent sick leaves. Begin the conversation in a non-confrontational manner, expressing concern for her well-being. For example, “Elena, I've noticed a pattern of absences recently and wanted to check in with you. Is everything okay? Understanding the challenges you may be facing can help us support you and help you find solutions together.”

· Demonstrate active listening: Allow Elena to share her perspective. Active listening is crucial to building trust and rapport and identifying the underlying issues that might contribute to Elena’s frequent absenteeism.

· Explain the impact on the team: Communicate the impact of unplanned absences on colleagues and resident care. Share how Elena’s frequent absences affect the team dynamic and collaboration.

· Explore solutions: Work with Elena to explore potential solutions to the challenges she may be facing. You might say, “Let's work together to find solutions. We have support available through Disability Management and the Employee Assistance Program to address personal and/or work-related issues.”
