Heated Argument During Shift

Priya, an experienced healthcare aide known for her efficiency, was feeling overwhelmed during a particularly busy morning. Raj, a newer staff member, approached her for assistance with a resident who required immediate attention.

Priya snapped at Raj, "Can't you see I'm swamped with work? I don't have time to hold your hand through every task. Figure it out!"

Raj, feeling embarrassed and frustrated, tried to explain the urgency of the situation. However, Priya talked over them, dismissing their concerns. "I don't care. I've been doing this job for years, and I don't need a lecture from someone who just started here. Just handle your responsibilities."

The exchange escalated, with both Priya and Raj exchanging harsh words in front of other staff members and residents. Their team lead, Anita, walked by the lounge as Priya and Raj were arguing.

Question 1

What should Anita do to address the situation?

Conversation starters:

· (To intervene and move to a private space): "Excuse me, Priya and Raj. I can see this is a tense moment. Let's step into the office for a minute to talk this through away from the main hallway."

· (To facilitate active listening): "Okay, let's take a breath. Raj, please tell me what happened from your perspective first. Thank you. Priya, I'd like to hear your side now. I understand you're feeling completely swamped this morning."

· (To set expectations): "I understand the frustration on both sides, but we must find a way to communicate respectfully, especially when residents are present. Our priority is a safe and calm environment for them and our team."

· (To pivot to problem-solving): "First, let's address the urgent need with the resident. Raj, what specifically is needed? Then, Priya, let's look at your assignment list and see where the pressure points are. We need to work as a team to manage these busy moments."
