FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – May 23, 2018
Burnaby – For the second year in a row, the Chilliwack Society for Community Living has been selected as one of six finalists in SafeCare BC’s Safety Den, which is being held on Monday, May 28, in Whistler, BC.
The third-annual Safety Den, part of the BC Care Providers Association’s annual conference, is a Dragon’s Den-style competition, where six contestants will be pitching their innovative ideas to reduce workplace injuries and improve the lives of those in care. In front of an audience of 250 people, our panel of Safety Dragons will listen to each presentation and pose questions to the finalists, who are vying for the top prize of $1,000. The finalists were narrowed from a record 21 submissions.
“We are very proud that the Chilliwack Society for Community Living was again selected as a finalist for this year’s Safety Den,” says Jeff Gilbank, the Society’s Director of Continuous Quality Improvement. “Our entire organization dedicates a lot of effort toward our workplace health and safety programs, and for it to receive this kind of recognition means a lot.”
The Chilliwack Society for Community Living invests upwards of $10,000 per year on wellness activities, and this attention to ensuring its employees are healthy and health-conscious has directly lead to a decrease in workplace injuries and accidents. For two months last year, the Society was injury-free, and the total number of workplace injuries has been decreasing, despite an increase in the number of staff.
“The continuing care sector has some of the highest workplace injury rates compared to all occupations in BC,” says Saleema Dhalla, Acting CEO for SafeCare BC, the health and safety association for the 29,000 continuing care workers throughout the province. “The Safety Den allows us to celebrate and recognize the innovative ideas and solutions that organizations are implementing to reduce workplace injuries.”
