A Year in Review

December 21, 2017 | News

As 2017 draws to a close, I would like to take this opportunity to acknowledge your contribution, as we work together to provide healthy and safe workplaces for the 29,000 continue care workers across BC. Reflecting upon the past year, there is much we can be proud of.

At the beginning of the year, we welcomed 7,300 Home Care and Community Health Support workers to SafeCare BC, and since then have developed several resources designed specifically for them.

With a focus on building capacity within the sector, we expanded our course and program offerings, which resulted in in an 81% increase in the number of people that participated in our courses, compared to the year previous.

We were also drawn to the opportunity to create our own in-house training centre. Sponsorship from Handicare (known locally as Angel Accessibility Solutions) and Invacare saw them outfit the Training Centre with $30,000 in equipment, including a bed, lifts and other types of equipment. In the past three months since opening, the Training Centre has hosted 20 courses and other events.

Building off the momentum that has been created since SafeCare BC was established just a few years ago, we are very excited about our new three-year strategic plan. Some of our identified priorities include: continuing to promote a culture of workplace health and safety improvement and expand marketing and outreach activities, with a special focus on three areas: front-line workers, continuing care organizations outside of Metro Vancouver, and post-secondary programs with links to the sector.

Take a look at our end-of-year infographic for some milestones and stats.

I would like to wish you and your family safe and happy holidays, and all the best in the coming year.
